Colon Cancer Symptoms, What You Need To Know

Colon Cancer Symptoms, What You Need To Know

This type of colon cancer is frequently called colorectal cancer. Other types of colon cancer are extremely rare and will be addressed in future articles. For our purposes of definition, the intestines are broken up into different layers of tissue. The symptoms of colon cancer can and very often will vary according to the location of the cancerous tissue. The layers will also determine how far the cancer has progressed or spread.

Early screening for individuals at higher risks is very important. Colon cancer begins and many times grows very slowly. Because of this guadual development it really can be detected and taken care of early on. The most noted early colon cancer symptom begins as a polyp that turns cancerous. Regular, early medical screenings can detect these polyps and remove them long before they can become cancerous. This is the most effective type of early colon cancer treatment. Although the number of people diagnosed annually with colon cancer has dropped, estimates show that 100,000 people or more will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year and a little less than half will fall victim to the disease.

Colon cancer in its earliest stages many times will display no symptoms at all. But as it progresses, some symptoms should have an individual quickly scheduling an appointment with their doctor. Bleeding from the rectum or blood mixed in the stool is not always from hemorrhoids. Diarrhea or any other change in bowel habits, abdominal tenderness or pain, unexplained anemia, unexplained weight loss, narrow stools, or bowel obstructions should be checked immediately by a physician.

After an initial exam, if the doctor has any suspicions, a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy may be required. A test called a fecal occult blood test for any detection of blood in the stool may be required. If one is diagnosed with colon cancer, more tests will have to be conducted. These are performed to see what stage the cancer has spread to. The stages of cancer can range from stage 0 which is the very earliest stages through stage 5. Stage 5 cancer means that the cancer has spread through the lymph nodes and to other organs of the body. Stage 0 cancer can generally be treated by removing the cancerous cells. Cancer that has advanced past the stage 2 will probably require chemotherapy combined with surgery.

The key to treatment of colon cancer is early detection of a cancerous colon. Obtaining information on colon cancer and then following the advice of a physician can save many lives.
